The Studio Challenges are experimental studies and pieces created in the studio while working out new ideas and inspirations. Some take only a couple hours and some are strategically worked on for a week. Each is a scratch that had to be itched, an idea that had to be acknowledged.

This Particular Piece:

17 x 16 charcoal on paper

Inspired by the varied values under the jungle canopy, I wanted to play with the process of relief. For the first layers, I painted a mixture of water and charcoal dust on. Once dried, I began erasing and lifting the charcoal. Once I established those values, I went back in with a charcoal stick and began emphasising the shapes of the darker moments.
